PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE AFTER 27 YEARS
2014 was year 27 for Summerglow. Unfortunately 2014 was the last year for this event. Due to reduced membership in the Medicine Hat chapter and scheduling conflicts at the Cypress Hills Resort, the Summerglow weekend will not happen in 2015.
The event started when a member of the Medicine Hat Chapter invited other singers in the chorus to come to his cabin in the east Cypress Hills area. The event grew as more people attended the weekend. The quartet BRASS was either invited the one year (or they just showed up - there is debate about which story is the truth), the weekend outgrew the cabin, and a Saturday night show was started at the Cypress Hills Resort. After BRASS lead the musical aspects of the weekend for a number of years, due to scheduling conflicts not all members of quartet could attend so the quartet Trademark was asked. Trademark lead the music at the weekend until 2014.
The weekend in July, which was often the same weekend as the Provincial Parks Weekend so that there would be fireworks on Saturday night, was attended by barbershop singers from across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The host chapter, Medicine Hat, looked after organizing the event and this became one of the best attended events of the year. A contingent of guys and their spouses would come from Saskatoon each year, often including a couple quartets to add to the show on Saturday night. Singers came from Calgary, Red Deer, Spruce Grove, Edmonton, and Lethbridge. The weekend included learning one or two new pieces of music, fellowship, a Novice Quartet contest with handcrafted medals, ice cream, a Saturday dinner together, a Saturday Show, and Sunday brunch. The Saturday Show was often attended by 200 people including those who were part of the weekend and others who purposefully stayed at the park that weekend to come to the Saturday Show. BRASS and then Trademark had an opportunity to perform on the show and the collected group demonstrated that they can learn and perform a new piece of music for the Show. Donations at the door were given to charity.
27 years of Summerglow demonstrated the interest in a summer activity for singers to get together from across Alberta and Saskatchewan to share a few songs. Times will change and perhaps the event will change. We are looking for input for possible future events including suggestions for the type of weekend that would appeal to a wider group of singers, a possible location for an event, and people who are interested in helping organize. Please contact Gordon Nott or Kevin Robertson with suggestions. A survey link will be posted soon for your feedback.
Thanks goes out to the Medicine Hat Chapter for keeping this tradition going for 27 years!
